From 1989 on Dutch realist painter Frans Koppelaar has been
painting his city. Contemporary urban landscapes of the canals, alleys, streets,
slums, harbours, and ships of Amsterdam pictured in a realistic, sometimes
neo-impressionistic style. His work is influenced by great Masters of the
past like J. Vermeer, G.H. Breitner, F. Arntzenius, J. Maris and others. Nevertheless
Koppelaar does not try to make copies of the past. His canvasses show us the
beauty of the city as we can see it in our own time.
Working on location (en plein air) he paints oil sketches with lively brush
strokes. His larger and more elaborate paintings are created in the studio,
often with photography as an aid. [ more
