Frans Koppelaar (1943)
This website is about the work of the Dutch painter Frans Koppelaar. In the image gallery you will find an extensive selection of paintings and drawings.
Amsterdam Cityscapes, his main subject, obviously take a prominent place. But also his portraits and landscapes are included in the overview. Koppelaar's premise is the classic idea that painting is a craft and beauty the motivation.
While he depicts the world that he perceives around him, Koppelaar manages to capture its timeless qualities in his paintings, using loose, fluid brushstrokes. Fast brushstrokes, but just the right ones in the right place.
His portraits, mostly commissioned works, show another side of Koppelaar's talent. In carefully balanced compositions the painter manages to capture that particular moment, at which the tension resolves and the essence of the person being portrayed reveals itself.
"I want to capture the world in oilpaint. And in such a way, that it looks alive!"
