The encyclopedia says: Figurative art describes artwork - particularly paintings - which are clearly derived from real object sources, but are not necessarily representational.
In my view the term figurative in art represents all kinds of art that are opposite to abstract art. I consider the term "abstract art" as a historical misunderstanding in itself. In fact every image is an abstraction of reality, isn't it?
